Self Defence - A Martial Artist's Perspective
Important Rules to Remember
3 Important Rules for Self Defence
As Martial Artists we aim to develop the skills and knowledge to be able to defend ourselves should we ever need to. But it is important to remember that in self defence using our heads is as important, if not more important, as being able to kick, punch and strike.
We believe there are 3 things every Martial Artist should be mindful of should they ever find themselves in a tricky situation:
1. Don't go overboard
In Taekwon-Do we strive towards Ilkyok Pilsung: one attack certain victory . That is to say that every attack and strike must be done with maximum effort so that it may end the fight swiftly and decisively.
You have the right to defend yourself against potential threats and attacks. However there is a fine line between defending yourself and becoming an aggressor.
The important phrase to remember is reasonable force. If the tables turn and you find yourself the dominant one, then that's the time to stop and walk away.
2. How much is your life worth?
No matter how proficient we are in our chosen Martial Art, no matter how many medals we have won or boards we can break, you cannot put a high enough value on your life .
In a self defence scenario, if your opponent demands your mobile phone, your wallet or your watch, you should seriously consider handing it over.
Would you know if they are concealing a weapon? Are you confident enough to stop a knife or a bullet?
If an assailant is only after your phone or purse think about whether you life is worth the cost of that item. Material things can easily be replaced but your life cannot.
3. Walk away if possible
The easiest fight to win is the one you don't take part in. If the opportunity presents to walk away from the fight with both sides unscathed, take it.
Likewise, employ some basic common sense and avoid situations which could lead to a fight; don't walk down a dark alley alone, don't engage in drunken arguments outside the pub, don't rise to the taunts.
Ultimately the greatest weapon any martial artist can employ is their own mind; train it to be strong and nimble and it won't lead you astray.
