Frequently Asked Questions

  • How long does it take to reach Blackbelt?

Every student is different but an average student training 2 times a week can expect to achieve blackbelt in around 3 to 4 years.

There are 10 different colour belts and most students will grade every 3 to 4 months.  But on reaching 1st Dan Blackbelt the journey doesn't stop there; there is still plenty more to learn with 9 different levels of Blackbelt.

Students must be aged 10+ to test for Junior Blackbelt and aged 14+ to test for Blackbelt.

  • What is the best age to start?

Young children benefit greatly from Taekwon-Do as it helps them to develop gross motor skills such balance and coordination.  It also helps improve their focus, discipline and instils teamwork and leadership.  At Nuneaton Taekwon-Do we take students from age 5 upwards.

However all ages can benefit from Taekwon-Do training and we have many older teens and adults come to us in order to learn a new skill, improve their fitness and overall wellbeing.

  • Am I too old to join?

Not at all!  Whilst children and teens benefit greatly from Taekwon-Do, so do adults.  We have many adults come to us as beginners who go on to excel.

Taekwon-Do can be adapted to all body types and abilities and our instructors will work with each student to ensure they are supported to reach their goals.

  • Do I have to be fit or flexible to join?

No - everyone starts somewhere!  Many people choose to start Martial Arts because they want to get fit in a fun and supportive environment.  Whatever your current fitness level we will work with you to reach your goals.

  • Do I have to compete?

Nuneaton Taekwon-Do takes part in a number of local, national and international competitions throughout the year.  Whilst we encourage every student to compete at least once for the experience as it's a great way to test your skills and knowledge, its not for everyone and students do not have to compete if they prefer not to.

  • Do I need any special equipment?

The beauty of Taekwon-Do is it can be practiced anywhere, anytime.  Initially you will not need any equipment and can attend in just t-shirt and shorts/joggers.

Before your first belt test you will need a dobok (uniform) then at around 6 months of training you will also need sparring equipment which the club can supply.  For more information regarding sparring equipment please see our dedicated article
