What is EmpowHER?

EmpowHER is a ladies-only, martial arts–inspired fitness programme designed to help women feel stronger in both body and mind. It takes the best bits of martial arts training — punches, kicks, padwork and purposeful movement — and packages them into an accessible, feel-good workout that’s all about health, confidence and wellbeing rather than fighting or competition. You don’t need any previous experience; the focus is on simple, easy-to-follow drills that leave you feeling energised, accomplished and proud of what your body can do.

Each class is carefully structured to support whole-person wellbeing:

  • Heart-raising drills to improve cardio fitness and help with weight management
  • Strength and conditioning exercises to build muscle tone and joint stability
  • Practical self-defence techniques to help you feel safer and more empowered in everyday life
  • Stretching and mobility to ease tension and support long-term flexibility
  • Cool-down and relaxation elements to help you leave feeling calmer and more balanced

Who is EmpowHER for?

EmpowHER is for women who want to feel fitter, stronger and more like themselves again, without the pressure or intimidation of a traditional gym. It’s ideal if you’d love to move more but don’t know where to start, if you prefer a ladies-only space, or if you’re curious about martial arts but want a non-contact, fitness-first class rather than fighting or competition.

Whether you’re juggling work and family, returning after illness or injury, navigating peri/menopause, or simply looking for an hour a week that’s just for you, EmpowHER gives you a welcoming, judgement-free community where you can train at your own pace, build confidence and genuinely enjoy exercise again.

EmpowHER is ideal for women who:

  • Want to get fitter and stronger in a fun, non-intimidating setting
  • Prefer training in a ladies-only group
  • Are curious about martial arts but want a fitness-first, non-contact approach
  • Are rebuilding confidence after illness, injury, stress or a long break from exercise
  • Value wellbeing, mental health and community as much as physical results

What to expect from a class?

In a typical EmpowHER class you can expect a friendly welcome, a relaxed introduction to what you’ll be doing, and plenty of encouragement from Petrina and the rest of the group. You’ll start with a gentle warm-up to wake up your muscles and joints, then move into simple martial arts–inspired combinations using punches, kicks and footwork that are easy to follow, even if you’ve never done anything like this before. Padwork and bodyweight exercises give you a full-body workout that helps build strength, stamina and balance, with options to dial things up or down depending on how you’re feeling that day.

Throughout the session, you’ll also work on stretching and mobility to release tension and support long-term flexibility, before finishing with a short cool-down and breathing or relaxation to help you leave feeling calmer and more grounded, not wiped out. The whole vibe is supportive, fun and judgement-free - expect laughter and a genuine sense of achievement as you walk out of each class knowing you’ve done something positive just for you.

Each class is carefully structured to support whole-person wellbeing:

  • Warm-up and mobility to gently prepare your body and joints
  • Easy-to-follow martial arts–inspired combinations (punches, kicks and footwork)
  • Padwork and conditioning for a satisfying, full-body workout
  • Practical self-defence skills for real-world confidence
  • Stretching and relaxation so you finish feeling accomplished, not exhausted

Frequently Asked Questions

  • When and Where are EmpowHER classes?

EmpowHER runs on Wednesday evenings from 5.45 pm to 6.45 pm at the Nuneaton Taekwon-Do dojang, alongside our established Taekwon-Do and Kickboxing programmes. The dojang on the Attleborough Fields Estate is a friendly, purpose-designed training space, easily accessible for local women who want a regular midweek boost for their fitness, confidence and wellbeing.

  • Do I need to be fit or have martial arts experience to join?

Not at all. EmpowHER is designed for real women with real lives, not professional athletes. You’ll be shown simple, easy-to-follow movements and given options to work at your own pace. Whether you’re just starting out, returning after a break, or already active, you’ll be supported from day one.

  • What should I wear or bring to my first class?

Comfy gym-style clothes are perfect -leggings or joggers and a t-shirt or vest. We usually train barefoot or in clean indoor trainers. Bring a bottle of water, and if you have asthma or any medical condition, remember to bring your inhaler or medication and let your trainer know before class. You don’t need any special equipment for your first session.

  • Is there any contact or sparring in EmPOWher?

No. EmpowHER is a fitness-focused, non-contact class. You’ll use martial arts–inspired punches, kicks and padwork for an amazing workout, but you won’t be fighting or sparring with anyone. The focus is on feeling strong, safe and confident while you train.

  • I’m nervous about coming on my own - will I feel out of place?

Many women come to their first class on their own, and they quickly realise they’re not alone. EmpowHER is a small, friendly, ladies-only space where everyone remembers what it’s like to be new. Your trainer will introduce you, explain how everything works and make sure you feel included from the moment you walk in.

  • Will the class be suitable if I have injuries, health issues or I’m peri/menopausal?

Yes, as long as your doctor is happy for you to exercise. EmpowHER is led by a Level 4 PT with experience supporting women through different life stages. Exercises can be adapted, and you’ll always be encouraged to listen to your body, take breaks when you need to and choose options that feel right for you.
