Workshop with Sport Psychology Coach Ben Hughes

Here at Nuneaton Taekwon-Do we are passionate about ensuring our members receive a holistic Taekwon-Do education.  That is to say that we focus on the Do just as much as Tae or Kwon.  With this in mind, we invited Sport Psychology Practitioner Ben Hughes along to the club to run a workshop on Self-Awareness for our students.

What is Self-Awareness?

Self-Awareness is the cornerstone of understanding your mind and how that relates to performance.  It means you can think objectively about yourself and have a good understanding of your emotions and the physical responses you go through, especially when under stress.  It means you can monitor you own thoughts, emotions and beliefs, and can ultimately increase self-control (or guk gi 극기 as we like to say in Korean!).

Taekwon-Do is challenging and the mental barriers can be as tough to overcome as the physical ones.  Whether it is in competition, in gradings or in class we each have our own mountains we need to climb.  Self-Awareness helps ensure that we are mentally prepared to take on these challenges and can help boost performance by ensuring we take an object look at ourselves.

Over three hours, Coach Ben helped guide our colour belts, black belts and international competitors through learning to be more self-aware.
In Ben's workshop we looked at:

➡️ Keeping an open-mind towards feedback from others as they can detect blind spots which you are oblivious to
➡️ Identifying your strengths and weaknesses
➡️ Discovering what we need to improve on and actively working on it
➡️ Exploring what you are thinking, how you are feeling and how you behave before, during and after competition or gradings

Everyone who attended came away having learnt more about themselves and we are definitely looking forward to working further with Coach Ben.
