Sleep Soundly with Martial Arts training

We all know how important a good night’s sleep can be; you wake up feeling refreshed, motivated and ready to start the day right. A bad night can affect our mood and our physical and mental states. Read on to find out the ways that Martial Arts can help you get those required ZZZ’s.

1. Physical exhaustion:

It might sound obvious but a really good Martial Arts workout can use up all that excess energy to help you sleep quicker, longer and deeper. Some people can experience an adrenaline dump after exercising so don’t plan to sleep straight after training or class, allow your muscles to relax after work and you’ll soon feel yourself drift off.

2. Mental exhaustion:

Sometimes, if our minds are not challenged enough, we find ourselves running mental marathons late at night despite bodily exhaustion and that’s because your mind requires exercise just as much as your arms and legs and a quality Martial Arts class will provide just that. The mind of a Martial Artist should always be focused on the training, whether that is focus on perfecting the technique or analysing the opponent. If your mind is engaged enough during training, you should have no problem switching it off before sleep.

3. Stress relief:

How many times have you lay awake at night contemplating the day’s events? Worrying over tomorrow’s? Apart from providing that mental exhaustion, Martial Arts are a fantastic way to de-stress and release negativity. Training will help release endorphins which make us feel more relaxed and happier, promoting a better night’s sleep.

4. Meditation:

Most traditional martial arts, such as Taekwon-Do, incorporate some element of meditation. It may not be obvious that you are doing it, but almost every instructor will provide the opportunity for quiet, contemplative thought and this relaxation and focus is a form of meditation. Meditation calms the mind and will allow and deeper and more restful sleep.
